How often does somebody ask you why you love surfing so much? What compares to a single wave, if anything? What makes dedicating a slice of your day to being in the ocean so damn important that you must partake, or somehow you feel a little less like yourself? These aren’t the kind of things we’re asked to elaborate on too frequently, and many of us don’t stop to take a look at our own “day in the life” routines when it comes to getting a few before work.
For Bianca Valenti, the answers to those questions seem to roll off her tongue with ease, which is a tricky task when considering the personal nature of our own attachments to surfing. It’s not always the easiest thing to pour your heart out over. Now add that to the fact that Bianca isn’t exactly the most high profile pro in women’s surfing. She’s relatively unknown, with no major sponsorship cutting the checks for her to charge the best waves in the world. So Bianca works and trains harder than the average Joe, then outsurfs Joe at places like Maverick, Pipe and Puerto. All this from a woman who once placed third at the ASP Women’s World Longboard Championship, topped Keala Kennelly in a contest at Pipe, and still believes she could cut it on the women’s ‘QS if she gave it a go. But since she can’t spend anybody else’s money to get to those contests, she’d rather save her own from trips to surf Puerto and Pipe. In the meantime, we get normal days like this, living the dream and surfing Ocean Beach with the boys.
