Hydrofoil surfboard

This may be the best gift idea for your aquaphobic friend. They can finally know the thrilling feeling of surfing without actually getting wet! The hydrofoil surfboard is a crazy surfboard that is attached to a hydrofoil–a structure that allows the board to cruise above the water’s surface at certain speeds. Made for tow surfing, the hydrofoil board has been tested by Laird Hamilton who is known for riding a different set of boards. Going more the SUP/hydrofoil/tow-in board route has allowed him to get acquainted with this crazy surfboard. One upside that sets it apart from the pack: the hydrofoil allows the board to cut through the water even in choppy waters. Finally, a board not dependent on conditions.

Meyerhoffer Slip In

This award-winning single fin is like none other you’ve ever tried. Yes, that’s right, the Slip In won “Best in Show” at The Boardroom Surfboard Show in October, 2012. Similar to the XYZ model, Meyerhoffer elevated the game with this one blending longboard feel with shortboard performance. At the length of a shortboard, it glides smoothly on top of the water like a longboard yet has the vertical capabilities of a standard shortboard. Don’t let the unconventional upside-down-bowling-pin shape throw you off. This thing rips! Still in doubt? Check out the video above.

Below is a video by Paul Fisher and the crew at Fishtales of the Nixon Weird Surfboard Contest on the North Shore. Surfers like John John Florence, Dustin Barca, Dylan Graves, Paul Fisher, Josh Kerr, Dusty Payne and more competed for $1,000. In all, it’s really a display of fun surfing on crazy surfboards that goes to show weird shapes aren’t just for raising an eyebrow at.
