The Inertia

I’d wager that everyone who’s surfed knows the feeling of time seeming to slow down while riding a wave. If things are going well, our perception of time in the water can also speed up, leaving an entire session feeling like a blur in retrospect. The new film Tempus, from Brazilian surf brand Seventy, explores the feelings of bending reality that can overcome us while riding waves.

True to its title, the film bills itself as “a visual journey of reflection on the relativity of time and the connection between surf, sea, space and time.” To that end, Tempus is replete with slow motion, reverse shots, and other nods to our shifting perceptions of existence.

Filmed in the Maldives in July of 2022, the movie features Alexandre Wolthers, Dario Costa, Danilo Alonso and Pedro Fujarra (the shaper and owner of Seventy). They ride a variety of classic and alternative shapes, including single-fins, twinnies and at least one asymmetrical board.

The film was directed by Pedro Fujarra and Heitor Vallim, and has images created by Davi Realle and Eduardo Bastos. Tempus also features an original soundtrack by Heitor Vallim.
