Fresh off competing at Bells earlier this year, Caroline Marks and Tatiana Weston-Webb returned to their respective homes in California and Kauai. Here we get an intimate glimpse into their lives as they prepare for the Corona Bali Protected – Marks sitting at the top of the Jeep Leaderboard at the time.
At 17, and in just her second year on the WSL Championship Tour, Caroline Marks is already making waves. But, what fans don’t often see is that at home Marks is still a normal 17-year-old working her way through high school algebra and planning schoolwork with her mom to tackle between events. As one interviewer puts it, she’s still a kid very much thrust into the adult world of competitive surfing. “Who am I?” Marks repeats after being asked. “I don’t know. What 17-year-old knows who they are?”
Compared to Marks, Tatiana Weston-Webb is a seasoned veteran on the CT, though she’s only 22. In contrast to the youthful, exuberant optimism of Marks, though, Weston-Webb is more measured if not a bit jaded. “I have so many different dreams and I have so many different people that sometimes I like to please or so many different sponsors that I want to impress. I don’t know. I guess it’s really easy for me to be, like, everywhere and nowhere at the same time,” she says.
