Varazze is one of the best places in the world for a night surf. It’s Italy’s most popular wave and it certainly has its days of pumping swell. But the quality of the wave itself isn’t necessarily what makes it such a perfect spot for a night strike. Hell, you don’t even need a full moon and clear skies to score Varazze after the sun sets. All you really need is for the surrounding city to steer clear of any massive power outages.
The entire Italian surf population flocks to this wave by day. And with limited take off sections even three dozen surfers in the water can feel like 3-day weekend kicking off summer in Southern California. So good luck feeling good about your wave count here. But thanks to the 8000W floodlights perched on the jetty you can snag a wave or twelve at Varazze throughout the night. Here’s Roberto D’Amico, showing up just in time for the lights to fire up and the crowds to disappear so he can enjoy one of the busiest waves in the Mediterranean without the masses.
