Ned Hart is not an old man. The kid is just 16 years old, but he’s already surfing waves of serious consequence like he’s got a wealth of experience under his belt. Take, for example, his first wave ever at Shippies, which can be seen at the beginning of Tim Bonython’s short video above. It was shot on March 26.
“It was my first wave ever here,” Hart told Bonython. “So I don’t know the line or whatnot. I cut back and I saw the step appear. I’m not really sure — I’ve got so much adrenaline that I can’t really remember it — but I think it was already capping. I just felt like I was free falling for ages. It felt like a 10-minute drop.”
That infamous step is no joke, so for someone Hart’s age to simply handle it like he did on his very first wave is a pretty staggering achievement. But Bonython kind of saw it coming.
“I met Ned Hart two years ago at his home town of Dunsborough in Western Australia,” he wrote. “It only took moments to understand what his long term goals were… Two years later the kid has turned into an adult quick.”
