Surfer Ryan Rustan found Sugar the surfing dog on the side of a road in Oakland, California. Sugar was only seven months old when they met but had already lived a life of hardship. She was missing teeth and was starving for food and love. A lot lot like Ryan himself. Ryan told me he was working to get sober when he found Sugar, and she helped keep his priorities straight.
“Some of the most amazing moments of my life with her,” Ryan told me. “Just flying down the wave at 30-40 mph, bottom turning into sections that just make us go faster and I’m just holding onto her lifejacket and both of our heartbeats are out of our chest. And I know at the end of the day, she’s felt some magic, just like me, instead of sitting in a dog cage.”
Yes, Sugar has brought some magic into Ryan’s life, too. He says Sugar has never had to be rescued in the water and they’ve been out on some solid days. As you can see, they go pretty hard. Check out their story.
