The Inertia

Heading down to Baja is a convenient way to find uncrowded surf, especially if you live in Southern California. The area offers an extensive variety of waves and caters to a wide range of skill levels.

I was 12 years old when I first discovered the Northern Baja gem that is Las Gaviotas. It was my first time on a surf trip to Mexico, and I had no idea what to expect, but I was excited to hang out with my family and surf foreign waves. I remember the feeling of freedom I had when we broke free of the sludge in Tijuana and drifted around a curve onto the coastal highway.

As we drove south, the beautiful coastline seemed to be littered with waves. The drive was so enjoyable that I felt like I blinked and we were at the gate checking in. It only takes about 45 minutes to reach Las Gaviotas from the Tijuana crossing, which speaks to the convenience of the place. If you decide to make the short journey south, here are seven reasons why you’ll love renting a house at Las Gaviotas:

1. Affordable houses (with ocean views!)

I’ve stayed in half a dozen different houses in this community, each with their own unique charm. I’ve gone with my family, my friends, in large groups, for holidays, for long weekends, and even for my sixteenth birthday. The way the homes are situated, they line the gently sloping hill in rows from the beach up toward the highway. Because they rise in elevation, nearly every home has an ocean view. To book a house, you send inquiries directly to the owner, and there are nice homes available to rent for as little as $100 per night.

2. A feeling of safety

The gate at Las Gaviotas is guarded with security around the clock, and when you walk around the community it genuinely feels safe. This aspect makes for a family friendly atmosphere. If you are not staying there, the guards will not let you in. You can keep your peace of mind knowing that there are guards making sure no outsiders enter the grounds. It is no secret that in the last decade, Mexico has become significantly less safe for travelers. As a result, the security at Las Gaviotas gives it a leg up on the competition.

3. Pool with a view

The pool and spa area is set right on the ocean. Just imagine… you are simultaneously sipping a cold beverage, relaxing in the pool and checking the surf. How can you beat that? Oh, yeah, there is a spa too, perfect for loosening up those muscles after a long day of surfing and fun in the sun.

4. Private beach

Of course, along with the private community comes the private beach. While it may be small, it has a volleyball court and plenty of space to lay around the sand with your family or friends. Looking down the coast to the south, you will find a picturesque setting, and with some action in the water your viewing pleasure will be even further enhanced.

5. Waves out front
Is there anything better than waking up and surfing out front of your house? I think not. If there is swell in the area, most days you will be able to surf the right point break on offer at Las Gav. It is relatively soft and ideal for long boarding, or a fish when it’s small. As it gets bigger, it becomes a really fun wave to short board, as well.

On good days, long walls will line up and allow you to draw out upwards of five maneuvers on a wave, and give you time to get creative.

6. Waves up and down the coast
A 30-minute drive in either direction along the coast from Las Gaviotas, and you can surf high quality waves such as K-38, Baja Malibu and San Miguel. Keep your eyes peeled as there are many beach breaks and reefs that go unridden in this region. With some luck, you may find yourself surfing one of these random waves with no one around but you and your mates.

Still not convinced? There’s plenty of other stuff to do, as well. In addition to the pool, the surf, and the beach volleyball court, Las Gaviotas also has a tennis court on offer for its residents and visitors. And if golf is your thing, Baja Mar Golf Course is a 20-minute drive down the highway, offering 27 holes of Baja bliss, also with an ocean view.

It is an absolute must that you look into staying here on your next trip south of the border. The bang you receive for your buck will come as a pleasant surprise.
