In early November, Hurricane Epsilon sent some absolutely enormous waves across the Atlantic. Nazaré, of course, was first-and-foremost when it came to global coverage of those waves, and viewers were treated to some serious antics. Kai Lenny’s hold down, for example, or the wipeout reel to end all wipeout reels. But Epsilon also created huge waves at Belharra and Mullaghmore, the latter of which was the place where one Conor Maguire surfed a 60-footer. Maguire’s wave may well be the biggest wave ever surfed at Mullaghmore.
In light of that, here’s a look back at a film made back in 2018 by Mikey Corker. Made in Ireland traces surfing’s roots in a place that wasn’t always considered a surf destination, and it shows the grit of those who surf there.
