When you think of Greece, surfing is probably not the first thing that comes to mind. But with its 16,000 kms of coastline, more and more Greeks are stepping on board.
Sitting in the center of the Mediterranean Sea, wind swells from all directions pound the coastline. It can be fickle, though, and surfers in Greece need to ensure that they’re updated on weather conditions on a daily basis – just like anywhere else. The most consistent places are the western coast and the island of Crete.
Greece has seen its fair share of crises in the last few years. The financial disaster pushed many who lost jobs into changing things that were once their hobbies into their professions. Not being able to satisfy your greed sometimes helps you look inside yourself and find your deeper wishes, even if they aren’t going to make you rich.
The surfing community in Greece is still small. When surfers run into each other on the beach, it’s almost always a friendly encounter. Come and see for yourself. There’s more to Greece than you thought.
