Gawd, there’s nobody like surfers when it comes to hating other surfers, right? Snowboarders don’t generally hate on one another unless someone stands lazily in a park line and doesn’t have the wherewithal to get out of the way. Skiers? Sometimes they hate snowboarders, but not so much anymore. Surfers? Yes, that’s where the hate can certainly reign supreme.
Probably because waves, good waves anyway, with a nice takeoff spot and a wall to do the things surfers like to do, are a commodity. Swells aren’t infinite. And neither are good setups. That hate, which seethes through surfers, can be seen vividly in the video above from Surf with Seb Chadwick.
Seb is a Sunshine Coast-based filmer and he put together this four-minute compilation of drop-ins and snakes and the what-not that goes on in most lineups around the world. There are multi-time offenders (see yellow shorts), punches thrown mid-waves, and even legends like Occy getting dropped in on (we’re positive he’s never dropped in on anyone, ha!).
Regardless, it’s just a good example, as you head into your weekend, of why hate happens in our little pursuit. And why we all keep coming back for more, regardless. Because even with all the angst and awkwardness, there are few things on this planet more fun.
