A family night surf turned tragic Thursday night in Malibu.
According to CBS News, authorities in Los Angeles responded to reports of screams coming from Topanga State Beach around 11:40 pm. When they arrived, they found a man performing CPR on his brother. The two had been out night surfing.
The two brothers lost track of each other in the water. One later found the other face down and dragged him into shore to perform CPR to no avail.
Both are reportedly skilled surfers, the victim actually being a former professional. Authorities haven’t yet released the identity of the victim nor his cause of death.
While a series of decent West/Northwest swells have brought sizeable surf to much of Southern California this week, the surf at the Los Angeles pointbreak the last few days has been far from big (mostly in the 3-to-4-foot range). Still, it’s common for many a SoCal surfer to take to the ocean at night during or around a full moon to avoid crowds. The next full moon is Sunday, December 22.
Our thoughts go out to the victim’s family and friends in light of this tragedy.
