A 58-year-old man is in serious condition after a Sunday morning shark attack off the coast of Honolulu, officials said.

The surfer was bit in the leg shortly before 7 a.m. near Kewalo Basin, according to the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources. Initial reports indicated an eight-foot tiger shark was responsible for the attack, local officials said in the press release posted below.

Paramedics responded and “administered life-saving treatment to a patient who was surfing and suffered a shark bite to right leg,” EMS told The Associated Press.

CBS Honolulu affiliate KGMB-TV reported that other surfers near the incident helped create a tourniquet to aid the injured man.

As of Monday morning, the surfer hadn’t been identified by authorities.

The local CBS News outlet mentioned reports of an eight-foot tiger shark returning to the area and acting aggressively.

“Honolulu Ocean Safety will continue to patrol the waters off of Kewalo Basin and Ala Moana after this morning’s shark bite. Lifeguards posted signs in the area,” EMS spokesperson Shayne Enright said in an email to the Honolulu Star-Advertiser.
