Surf fighting. It never ceases to amaze. We rarely see fighting in skateboarding, unless some Karen is telling a kid to get off her street. It’s pretty rare in snow, too, although we do see the occasional GoPro brawl footage come out of the mountains. But surfing? It seems like every other month there’s a gnarly clip where one surfer is attempting to rearrange another surfer’s face. Like this clip for example. It was posted to the Instagram page of Paulo Roberto Oliveira, a Brazilian surfer that I believe resides somewhere in the state of Santa Catarina. I messaged Paulo to try and get the lowdown on this ruckus but I’ve yet to hear back.
The clip was posted on the October 23 and has amassed nearly 100,000 reactions on IG. Who knows how many on TikTok? From the looks of it, one of the surfers wants a piece of the guy carrying the board. That didn’t work out too well for him. The board-carrying wave rider fakes with his left hand then gives the guy a couple of dings to the noggin with the fiberglass in his right. Things continue to escalate from there but they don’t get any better for the guy who started the fracas. He wanted the smoke but couldn’t handle the fire.
It’s impossible to tell exactly what started the fight. But more than likely it had to do with waves, and one person feeling like they couldn’t get enough of our precious commodity; or that someone was denying them access somehow (ie, dropping in, cutting them off, back paddling, all the things). Regardless, it got ugly really quick.
“Bully in the surf,” wrote Paulo in Portuguese in the caption, “that post surf vibe.”
Most of the comments speak to bad surf behavior, the man’s Mike Tyson-like ability with his surfboard, or both. I found a useable vid clip on TikTok above but you can see a clearer version through Paolo’s Instagram page, below.
