Every now and then, you make a drop that you didn’t think you were going to make. Perhaps you swung a little too late and weren’t quite ready for the bottom to drop out. Maybe you just messed up your judgment and paddled for a wave that you just weren’t going to make. But then, lo and behold, you’re on your feet and wondering how, exactly, it happened. That’s likely what Lungi Slabb was thinking on the wave you see above.
“Lungi Slabb somehow landed one of the most amazing late takeoffs you will ever see,” wrote Raw Surfing, “followed by one of the deepest tubes to ever be made.”
Slabb is a young Coodjingburra surfer from Fingal Head, NSW. His free surfing career has put him all over the world, and people are beginning to sit up and take more notice of just how good he is. He was recently named as a finalist at the Indigenous Surfing Community Celebration Awards, and it’s a sure bet that more great things are on the horizon from him.
The Superbank certainly does live up to its name, but if you blow a take off, someone else down the line definitely going to take your spot. As you can see, Slabb’s take off fooled anyone sniffing at the wave, and when he reappeared like a rabbit out of a hat, the surprise was obvious, both on his face and anyone else who saw it.
