The Inertia

Christmas in Hawaii hits a little differently. It’s not a white one, that’s for sure. You’re not building snowmen and snapping icicles off the eaves. Stockings might be hung by the mantel with care and trees might be decorated in living rooms, but things are celebrated in a more Hawaiian way there. Which makes sense, because it’s Hawaii. And on Christmas Eve, North Shore residents were graced with a bump in swell that turned Sunset Beach into something worth getting excited about. It’s a deceiving wave, one that feels far heavier than it looks. There’s more water moving around out there, too, but when you get a good one, it makes it all worthwhile.
