The Inertia

Sterling Spencer has had a long road to recovery. After a fin to the head caused a traumatic brain injury, Sterling was laid low by a myriad of symptoms, including being barely able to walk. Even worse, doctors seemed completely stumped about what was actually going on with him.

Eventually, Sterling went on a restorative trip to the North Shore, as outlined in a short documentary by Sam Kempf that Sterling has posted to his YouTube channel. At first, Sterling was barely able to make it to the water, but as the months went on he found himself regaining a sense of his former self. “I would have never gotten better if I was just gonna stay in a calm, safe environment,” said Spencer of the experience. “I had to go straight to the peak. Straight to the North Shore.”

Part of Sterling’s recovery process was also finding out when to get back to his life as a comedian. “It was hard for me to be funny,” says Spencer. “There’s so much pain in my body. It’s like, I needed humor, but at the same time to find the place inside myself to give the humor.” However, on the other hand, he says “I instantly knew when I was ready. It was weird.”
