The Inertia

Sterling Spencer recently celebrated a year since he rebooted Pinch My Salt as a YouTube channel. To commemorate the milestone, he re-released one of his classics. Flashback Boomerang is a bizarre, hilarious and surprisingly beautiful ode to none other than Mark Occhilupo. Not only that, but this new version is a director’s cut of sorts, with extra footage not seen in the original video.

The video begins with a voice over from Occy himself. “It’s me, your father. What can I say, I haven’t really been there for you. How could I? How could I look at ya? You’re nothing like me,” he says. “I just went parasailing in the Swiss alps for three weeks, didn’t touch the bottom.”

That gives you an idea of the general tone you’re in store for. Spencer’s unique comedic voice is on full display here, both in the visuals and writing. It often feels almost like a Wes Anderson movie, with warm, saturated color correction, stark shots and affected costumes.

However, by far the best part is seeing Occy getting dragged along for the ride. Though he’s an undeniably powerful presence on camera, there are a few moments where Occ seems a little bewildered at whatever the hell Sterling is making him do and say. Even in those moments he’s always game, though, and it makes video all the better for it.
