Stephanie Gilmore has seven world titles. You don’t get seven — or even one — without having a certain mindset, and she’s got it. It’s the same kind of mindset that drove Kelly Slater; the “second place is the first loser” mindset. Second place isn’t good enough. First place is the only place. And Gilmore has her eyes squarely on an eighth world title.
Despite her sunny demeanor, Gilmore has the heart of a lioness. She wants to win, and she wants to win badly. She’s heading into the Rip Curl WSL Finals at Trestles in fourth place, trailing Sally Fitzgibbons, Tatiana Weston-Webb, and Carissa Moore. The event, which runs from September 9-17, is a new format. It’s a one-day, winner-take-all race, and Gilmore might want it more than anyone else in the running.
