In the last decade, wave pools have gotten exponentially better. They’ve gone from an unsurfable lump of water to a tiny scale model of a perfect wave, then ramped up to the waves we see in pools today. Technology sure does move quickly, doesn’t it?
Speaking of quickly, South Korea built the world’s largest surf park in a mere year-and-a-half. It’s a pretty stunning feat — 167,000 square meters of oceanfront property that includes 20 different wave types as well as waveless zones for kayaking. The whole thing is part of a much larger development that will have six hotels, convention centers, marinas, and museums.
The wave pool used Wavegarden technology (read an interview from 2011 with Wavegarden’s founder, back when it was just a scale model), which allows them to offer up a whole menu of different waves. The one you see above is the Malibu wave, which, if you like longboarding at Noosa or First Point, looks like a good time.
