I started linking up with Ryland and his dad, Peter, last year after I met them during the Vissla ISA Junior Championships. At only 16, Ryland possessed a skill and knack that puts him well in contention for being one of the best up-and-coming talents from Southern California, perhaps even the world. He has proved his technicality back at home in smaller surf, and he continues to excel in the heavy tubes of Hawaii. It’s hard to believe that he’s only 16 years old.
After El Niño passed the waves have been a little slow and frequent stints of poor conditions have become a bit too common for anyone’s liking. However, staying optimistic and determined has always payed off. If there isn’t a barrel, Ryland will find a ramp. Here is a small spring selection of photos taken in various places around Southern California.
