The Inertia

Snapper Rocks is not exactly a bastion of surf etiquette. The waves there are amazing, for sure, but when a wave that good is sitting in front of one of the surfiest cities in the world, the crowds are… bad. It’s quite possible that Snapper is the most crowded wave in the world, and when you couple great wave and a ton of good surfers, the inevitable is going to happen. Because it’s… you know, inevitable.

In the video above, which was shot back in May — a good month for waves in Coolangatta — a surfer appears to get dropped in on right before a potential tube. The guy in the bucket hat, who, at first glance, looks to be the burnee, grabs the burner’s surfboard and flicks him out of the way with ease. But if the YouTube comments on the video are to be believed, all is not as it seems.

While we can’t confirm if it’s true, a commenter appears to be the one who was flicked out of the way. “Mate, that’s so funny you’ve posted that way just for the sake of the video,” he wrote. “Why don’t you post it from the beginning of the wave? I was sitting waiting this wave comes and I took it deeper passed the guy and he does that. That’s so disrespectful.”

Whatever the case may be, can’t we all agree that rules in surfing should be followed? It’ll never happen, but it sure would be nice.
