Skyler the surfing dog is, as the name implies, a dog that surfs. And since getting barreled is the best thing in all of surfing, it only makes sense that Skyler would become the first dog to get barreled.
Skyler’s dad Homer has been surfing for most of his life. He’s a talented guy, having surfed competitively for a while before hanging up the jersey, and it was obvious from the start that Skyler wanted to follow in his footsteps.
“She was a natural,” Homer said. “She liked being right up at the nose, hanging paws over the nose, and leaning into turns. It seemed pretty instinctual.”
Homer didn’t just throw her into the deep end, though. They started off small before working their way up to bigger and better waves. Soon, they entered a dog surfing competition and they were off to the races. Over the years, Skyler has garnered quite a bit of attention, including a role on the Netflix show Pet Stars.
Skyler isn’t just a surfing dog, either. She’s a service dog as well, helping people with with disabilities learn how to surf. And now that she’s been tubed at the Surf Ranch, Skyler is in the small percentage of surfers who’ve actually been barreled.
