You used to never know what was lurking beneath the surface. But with the advent of drone photography, especially as a tool for filming surfers, we’re getting more and more insight into what’s below as we enjoy the waves. The video above adds to that well of knowledge.
On Sunday morning, surfers were enjoying the waves at Oneʻula Beach (better known as Hau Bush) a half hour drive west of Honolulu, when a dark shape was spotted amongst the revelers. One surfer flagged down the drone filming from above to take a closer look, and from behind the lens, it’s easy to see the “dark shape” is a rather sizable shark. The filmer estimated it to be about 6-8 feet.
The shark doesn’t take much interest in the surfers around it, even as a longboarder catches a wave right above the apex predator. Just another happy reminder that while sharks are out there, and often closer to us than we’d like to admit, for the most part, they couldn’t care less about humans.
