“Skating adds to my surfing and surfing adds to my skating, it gives me flow,” a 14-year-old Shane Borland once told us. That was five years ago now but you still can’t watch the man without recognizing he must still hold this sentiment near and dear.
At the time, Shane had been spending time under Christian Fletcher’s wing, surfing with him. And even as a grom, he pointed to “Big Al Sarlo” as one of his ideal surfing buddies. So, after spending time with two people like that, how could Borland not come out of it with a thick mixture of skating style in his surfing and surf flow in his skating? As a result, Shane spends a lot of time racing toward closeout sections and launching off the lip. He’s no one trick pony, but a grown-up Shane Borland’s style just screams “skate, skate, skate!”
