They say kids change you. The truth of the matter is they don’t change you as a person so much as give you a new perspective of what’s important in life. Case in point: Shane Beschen. In the late 90s and early 2000s, Beschen was a Championship Tour perennial consistently going toe-to-toe with Kelly Slater in his halcyon days. At the time, the Tour was as much about partying around the world as it was competing.
When Beschen’s first son, Noah, was born, though. Everything changed. Instead of spending most of the year on the road away from his wife and son, he decided to take them with. He was one of the first to do so, and now it isn’t uncommon for the top 34 to travel with their family in tow. But it started with Shane Beschen charting the course and having his priorities in order.
Now, as Beschen explains, the competition and accolades have been replaced with a new joy – seeing his two sons transition into good people.
Now off tour, Shane Beschen epitomizes what it means to be a rad dad and family man.
