Sebastian Zietz was standing on a surfboard, except he was on the sand. Well, about six feet above the sand – with the help of his friends. Moments after Zietz was announced the 2012 Vans Triple Crown Champion, the Kauian set a new trend in surf celebrations as his friends chaired his board up the beach while he surfed on top.
The 24-year-old Kauaian surfer registered a stellar performance this winter on the North Shore, winning the Reef Hawaiian Pro and making the finals at the Sunset World Cup. His performance secured him a spot on next year’s ASP World Tour. Zietz is only the second surfer in the history to claim the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing without being on tour. Zietz also earned $100,000 along with a $10K Nixon watch and a Harley Davidson.
“I don’t know what to say,” Zietz said. “It’s just amazing. I’m over the moon. I’m doing it for everyone in Kauai and Hawaii. And everyone watching. Love you guys. You’re the reason we have a job. To do it for Andy, was super sick. I think he had a little hand in it.”
