Pipeline is a place that no one escapes unscathed. If you surf there, you will be beaten down. Maybe not if you paddle out, catch a tiny shoulder, and ride it back in, but if you surf Pipeline proper for any real length of time, it’s a sure thing.
Take, for example, the wave you see at the beginning of the video here from Off Da Lip. The pack is sitting where they should be sitting, waiting for Pipeline to do its thing. But Pipeline’s “thing” often includes second reef sets that will appear, seemingly out of nowhere, and mow the entire lineup down.
It’s all part and parcel of chasing waves at the world’s most famous wave, but this video is a good example of just how much more powerful Mother Nature is than we are.
