The Inertia

How many times have you heard some variation of this cliché?  “When there’s waves, it’s as good as anywhere in the world.” Go to any surf town in the world, even along the Great Lakes, and you will find a surfer willing to share that sentiment with you.

The beauty is there has to be some nugget of truth to it keeping that surfer in place. Hearing it from a guy like UK surfer Sandy Kerr is a reminder of this. Kerr spends most of his year without world-class waves breaking near his home but he doesn’t bolt for the North Shore or the Gold Coast, places he acknowledges would offer up plenty more tube time and obviously, a lot less neoprene. So what really keeps Kerr tethered to some of the darkest and coldest waves on the planet? Well, he obviously has a nose for finding and surfing the North Sea’s best.
