Still from the festival’s “El viaje_Kassia Meadow”

The Inertia

The 14th annual Surfilmfestibal just kicked off and will run until June 26th in its usual location of San Sebastian, Spain. After visiting the festival in 2015, we called it the “Smartest Surf Film Festival in the World.” Because it is. What other film festivals have art exhibits called Surf, Civilization, and Barbarism?

Crickets.

Surfilmfestibal will include movie and documentary premiers, art work and other surf-related activities and parties. The art and cinema unveiled in the past have been particularly thought provoking. Every year the festival focuses on a specific theme or issue. This year’s festival will deal with the potential destruction of three waves in Japan because of surfing’s imminent entrance into the Olympic realm.  So if you’re near San Sebastian in the next few days, we HIGHLY recommend you get your butt into a seat at one of the film premieres.

This year’s festival has numerous films premiering which deal with all forms of surf related topics. There is everything from big wave surfing in the Basque country to surfers fighting against pollution at their local breaks. The official agenda for this year’s festival can be found on its website.

Here are few films and events that definitely warrant a visit if you’re in the area:

Olas Limpias (Clean Waves) focuses on protecting our seas and is the main festival event. Date and time: 06/22 8:00 pm

-John Florence and Blake Kueny’s View From a Blue Moon because if you have not seen this film yet, or even if you have, a viewing is impossible to pass up. Date and time: 06/26 7:00 pm

-“Dabadaba” is a concert but not just your usual surf-film-premier-concert. Instead, it hosts DJ Marcelle & DJ Woyzero who will host, “a crazy session of africanism, tribal techno, house deranged, funk of Middle East.” Oh yes. Date and time: 06/25 midnight

There are tons of other events and ticket prices are refreshingly reasonable. If you live in San Sebastian or just coincidentally find yourself in Basque country this week, Surfilmfestibal would be well worth a visit.
