Aruban sailor Just van Aanholt took to social media to show off a clip of himself catching a wave right next to a surf lineup at Scheveningen in the Netherlands. Though many were impressed by his skills piloting the small, one-man sailboat, surfers flocked to the comments to express their distaste for the stunt.
“End of camp shenanigans so I had to give a little show for the surfers!” wrote Van Aanholt in the caption. The post is one of Van Aanholt’s regular updates on his quest to qualify to represent Aruba at the 2024 Olympics. There were many positive comments from other sailors, who commended Aanholt’s control of the tiny craft. However, the surfers who chimed in were quick to point out the potential dangers of a sailboat deliberately passing so close to a lineup.
Van Aanholt, for his part, seemed to shrug off the criticism. When one commenter responded to the video with “Not safe captain. Could kill surfers if you lose it,” Just replied with, “A lot of things can happen.”
