Rob Machado is a bit like a Buddha in surfing. An ever-present hint of a smile sits on his face, and he occasionally drops these casually deep thoughts about riding waves and how it relates to life in general. He’s got a lot more hair than Buddha and a few less pounds on his frame, but you get the idea.
That’s why Wave Pool Mag (yup, there’s a mag for that!) sat down with him in France to get his take on wave pools. Machado explained what his perfect wave pool would look like (“I don’t know why someone just doesn’t take all the technologies and put them in one pool”), what he rode during his first session at Kelly’s pool (a freakin’ Alaia!), and what wave pools mean for the groms of today (“it’s going to be part of their life… it’s going to be the norm).
