The Inertia

When it comes to icons of style in the surfing world, it’s tough to beat Rob Machado. Nic von Rupp recently fired up a podcast called the Von Froth Cast, and for his second episode, he came out swinging. Machado sat down with him for an hour-and-a-half long conversation that covers… well, just about everything.

“Rob is arguably one of the biggest icons in surfing, ever,” Nic wrote. “Whether it’s for his unique surfing style, his starring roles in Taylor Steele’s films such as “Loose Change” and “Drifter,” which became references for a whole generation, or his very-successful competitive career with multiple wins on the World Tour including a Pipe Masters, Rob has made a lasting impact, to say the least, before leaving the tour and becoming the free surfing legend we know today. Also, talk about a nice guy.”

They also talked about the most famous high-five in surfing which can be examined at length via a film about it The Inertia created.

His influence goes beyond style these days, too. Not only is the way he rides a surfboard a bit of a blueprint for surfers around the world, but his influence in the design of surfboards can be seen in lineups everywhere. His particular brand of surfing lends itself to surfboards a bit more suited to the everyday surfer instead of a surfer on the Tour — a bit wider, a bit longer, a bit flatter, and a bit easier in general. Because surfing, after all, is for fun, and why ride a surfboard that’s not all that fun to ride?
