The current state of surfing is anarchic and congested, to say the very least. This overabundance has fostered a new breed of creators, innovators, and adventurers seeking to trade busy lineups for desolation and solitude, a sentiment which is stretching further and further off the grid. In fact, there aren’t many places these days that are too remote, too dangerous, or even too sharky for those searching for some isolation.
Andrew Matthews, who was likely feeling the oppression of his local San Diego surf spots, sought to get away from the rat race and score some alone time. And there’s arguably no other continent on God’s green Earth that is more remote than Africa. But it wasn’t J-Bay, Morocco, or even Namibia Andrew had his eyes on. It was a very rare, very seldom spoken river in Zambia called the Zambezi River that Andrew was frothing over. And it’s perhaps the greatest river wave we’ve ever seen. Here’s Andrew tearing the lid off this standing wave, and he even gets barreled a few times. This looks like crazy fun, doesn’t it? It sure as hell beats river surfing in Munich:
