The Vivo Rio Pro has gotten off to a promising start, with day one featuring competitive shootouts and an impressive aerial by John John Florence. However, since then it’s been a little less promising. The event’s been on hold due to lack of surf. However, the competitors have sure been making the most of the lay days.
True to form, right out the gate Ferreira managed to make a dollar out of a dime. Sure, we can all agree that jaw-dropping alley-oops in peak conditions are a sight to behold, but I’d argue it’s even more impressive to be able to huck an air in two-foot garbage.
Italo’s followed up by the likes of Molly Picklum, Samuel Pupo and Leonardo Fioravanti, who add some some more Hail-Mary airs and Huntington hops to the mix. All in all, it seems like a good time. In a lot of ways it’s nice to to see Championship Tour surfers throw caution to the wind and just go for it in a way that you don’t always get to see under the pressure of competition.
That being said, hopefully the Rio Pro can get going with the elimination bracket already.
