The Inertia

San Diego and the Bay Area have been getting a lot of attention in this massive swell, but where was Ventura in all of this? Never fear, because it turns out Rincon also went massive, as pictured in the above video from YouTube channel Slow Waves. As you can see, she’s not called ‘The Queen of the Coast’ for nothing.

A wider angle of the proceedings comes from YouTube channel Hocus Bloke. The comment sections of both videos hosted some lively debate about whether this was the biggest Rincon ever or merely in recent memory. One commenter weighed in that “this is the largest Rincon I’ve ever seen in my 55 years,” while others scoffed and compared the surf to a notable swell events in 1969 and 1983 that rivaled or topped the waves seen this week.

Still others debated the use of the XL or XXL label to describe the surf. Granted, these terms get thrown around a lot, in no small part because of the desire to generate hype for YouTube content. However, they are also imprecisely defined. While some think that the ‘XXL’ tag should be reserved for only the biggest waves on a global scale, others use the term relative to the average waves at a given break.

No matter how you define it, one thing’s for sure: those are the biggest waves Rincon has seen in a long, long time
