The Inertia

In a world that has a large focus on the progression of shortboard surfing (of which there is nothing wrong with), three young grommets have decided to follow the roots of the single fin movement and surf craft inspired by surfers of a retro age.

Kai Annetts (13yrs), Cale Coulter (14yrs) and Jordan Spee (15yrs), have been mentored by Sunshine Coast shaper/surfer Mitch Surman (who, at 23-years-old, isn’t that far out of grom status himself) to become young followers of the 60’s and 70’s style of single fin surfing. Watching and studying the talents of Phil Edwards, Miki Dora, David Nuuhiwa, and the more modern styles of Alex Knost, Jared Mell, and even Mitch himself, the three are looking to influences from the past to influence their own style of longboarding and single fin riding. Mitch has provided these young minds with a different perspective on riding waves, always promoting the notion of having fun. The groms have developed their own board in conjunction with Mitch, and ride anything from 5ft wing-tipped single fins to 9ft heavily glassed traditional logs. They’ve developed a model of board with Mitch in the shaping bay that suits them and the conditions we receive from swell, and labelled it the Peace Frog.
