The Inertia

Editor’s Note: This feature is presented by our partners at Quiksilver.

Surfing thrives on routine. More than any other sport, it has a way of ingraining itself into the very fabric of existence for its practitioners. But there’s a difference between repetition and monotony. Creating muscle memory in waves opens the door for explosive airs, pulling into cavernous barrels – and yes, stomach-lurching wipeouts. Moments that both shatter routine, and are a result of it. In fact, it’s that training and repetition that allows the most dedicated to rise above, to become rock stars in the world of surf. Because you better believe those who’ve put in the hard yards have more than earned that status.

Care to see that ethos personified? Look no further than Repeater, an upcoming full-length surf movie produced by Quiksilver. Shot on location in Réunion Island, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Australia and Ireland, the film features Mikey Wright, Rolando Montes, Griffin Colapinto, Kael Walsh, Al Cleland Jr., Lungi Slabb and Andy Nieblas – surfers that have certainly left their share of skin in the sea. It’s a movie that embodies the laser-focus of athletes who spend every waking moment chasing perfection, as well as the the adrenaline rush from sending the hell out of it.

The film’s tagline, “Eat, Sleep, Surf, Repeat,” hits on this endless repetition that can border on obsession. Wake up before sunrise, surf to sunset, eat and sleep just enough to go back out and do it again. Repetition creates muscle memory, routine builds experience, familiarity lets us spot opportunity. For the world’s top surfers, it takes spending every waking moment living and breathing surfing to prepare them for that singular, jaw-dropping wave that makes it all worthwhile.

As such, Repeater portrays surfers’ state of constant return. It follows these athletes’ journeys as they dig in deep to overcome challenges in the water — technically, physically and mentally. Repeater communicates what it looks like to keep surfing in regular rotation, whether riding a familiar break or something completely new. In doing so, it perfectly captures the rush of full days in the water

“Filming for Repeater, we embraced the fundamentals of core surfing, no matter the size, the swell — no hesitation,” says 2023 ISA World Surfing Games Champion Al Cleland Jr. “We fed off each other’s energy and used every chance to just send it. From day one of the trip to the last, we never stopped. Wake up, surf, eat, sleep, repeat!”

The film is a followup to Quiksilver’s previous effort, Saturn, that had Repeater star Griffin Colapinto frothing to throw his hat in the ring. “Saturn came out pretty much right when I came onto the Quiksilver team,” he said, “and I was really hyped on the feel and how they put that together. Hearing that they were already filming for another project soon after, I made sure to block off the only open time I had after the Margaret River Pro to go film with the crew.”

“Releasing a movie that pushed surf culture forward was our main goal,” said Quiksilver Global VP of Marketing Bobby Gascon. “Filmmaking has always been a critical platform for surfing, documenting progression through the lens of surfing, art and music. As a follow-up to Saturn, we’re honored to partner once again with acclaimed director Wade Carroll, who created another exceptional film that will inspire and stand the test of time as part of Quiksilver’s legacy in surfing.”

The film officially releases via YouTube on July 29, 2023. To celebrate, Quiksilver is hosting a global premiere July 28 at the Huntington Beach International Surf Museum. The premiere will be attended by Griffin Colapinto, Kael Walsh, Rolando Montes and Al Cleland Jr. Regional screenings will take place in France, Portugal, the Netherlands, Israel, the United Arab Emirates and other locations.
