Firework shows are amazing. Everyone gathers to watch the pyrotechnic display and ooh and ahh at the colors lighting up the sky. But sometimes (emphasis on “sometimes”), firework shows gone wrong are even better.
In 2012, thousands of people gathered in San Diego to watch the Big Bay Boom, one of the largest firework shows on the West Coast. The show takes place over San Diego Bay, not far from Black’s Beach, Sunset Cliffs, and Scripps Pier. The 4th of July show was slated to last 18 minutes but due to a malfunction, all of the fireworks went off at once, lasting a total of 30 seconds, making it the best, worst firework show ever. Nobody was hurt and the show quickly became an internet sensation.
Ten years later and it’s time to take a look back at the most incredible, 30-second firework show we’ve ever seen. It’s unlikely something like this will happen again, but at least it’s immortalized through our computer screens.
