Brett Barley- Brett Barley's stomping grounds, the Hatteras Lighthouse, is some thirty miles south of this spot in Rodanthe. But it's always a pleasure to see him doing his thing in the Mirlo Beach tubes. Photo: Mickey McCarthy.
Chris Hunter-The backwash at high tide gave Chris Hunter a bit of a surprise drop. Mirlo Beach, Rodanthe. Photo: Mickey McCarthy.
Drew Meredith-An avid ski assist surfer, Drew Meredith decided to do it manually today, squeezing one out on this Mirlo left. Photo: Mickey McCarthy.
Jeff Myers- Standing tall on the late afternoon wall, Jeff Myers got the most out of what light we had left. The shadow in the whitewater in front of Jeff are actually the shadows from the houses on the beach slowly moving out into the lineup as the sun gets lower. Photo: Mickey McCarthy.
Jesse Hines-Some thankful tube time for Jesse Hines, as he went into the hospital the very next day for a hip replacement. Hang in there Jesse, we miss you in the lineup! Photo: Mickey McCarthy.
Kitty Hawk Wave-Between the hurricane and several strong nor'easters, all the sand bars have been re-arranged in town for the better. The sand is packed in nice and close to shore, which helps create this little Kitty Hawk snapper. Photo: Mickey McCarthy.
Kitty Hawk-Fall is a time of beautiful colors. This is Kitty Hawk with the jet stream sweeping over with some creative cloud work. Photo: Mickey McCarthy.
Mirlo Beach-There was a time when the beach behind these houses reached out to where that wave's breaking. This stretch of beach is actually the farthest point east on the Outer Banks and takes a steady hammering because of it. Mirlo Beach, Rodanthe Photo: Mickey McCarthy.
North S-Turns-Early fall brings strong winds as the air masses battle out over the open waters along the banks. As a frontal system approaches, we often get a strong southerly flow up from the open ocean south of Cape Hatteras. Sometimes we get lucky and get a sweeping south swell with the gentle 40 mph off shore winds. North S-Turns has the right beach angle to make it happen. Photo: Mickey McCarthy.
Under the House-In town fights the same erosion problems as our neighbors do farther south, just not quite as extreme. Kitty Hawk always seems to get the worst of the over wash, and I'm afraid it doesn't look too good for these houses along the Beach road, Hwy 12. Photo: Mickey McCarthy.
Zach Knapp-Zack Knapp latches on to a runner at Mirlo beach.Things are going to get tougher in the next few weeks as the water temps drop as the Labrador current starts to make itself felt. Photo: Mickey McCarthy.
