The Inertia

There are images of Los Angeles waves that would make you think the town is an oasis of spitting barrels. But images can be deceiving. It’s no secret the beaches of the South Bay host their fair share of hollow, thumping waves. And it’s also no secret most of those waves are just really, really beautiful closeouts. That’s why most of them go untouched.

The Southland was hit with a solid storm to kick this week off but while all that was still brewing somewhere over the Pacific, SoCal enjoyed a short-lived window with some wind swell. That swell produced a quintessential South Bay morning— one that might have looked incredible on the cams or during a quick drive by the beach. In fact, videographer Brad Jacobson‘s description of the day was about as South Bay as it gets: “…a bunch of closeouts and a few gems.”

Emphasis on “a bunch” here, because a majority of what Jacobson sat on the beach and watched that morning was not the kind of surfing you associate with those images of spitting beachbreak barrels. There were a lot of misses. A lot of falls. There were head dippers. A lot of closeouts. And what Brad likes to call the “what could have beens.”

“We’re not really sure if it would have been a great wave but, well…could have been.”
