In the wake of Hurricane Irene’s East Coast destruction, rumors of the Quiksilver Pro New York’s cancellation made their rounds through the Internet. Today, the ASP posted an update stating that, although the Long Beach community saw significant damage, the contest will begin its 11-day holding period on September 5th, as scheduled. It will, however, be a vastly scaled down event, with the music venues, motocross and skate demos cancelled. The contest will run as initially planned, but with surfing being the main focus.

In a statement on the ASP website, Quiksilver said, “The Quiksilver Pro NY is first and foremost about the surf contest and Long Beach has an incredible surfing tradition and spirit. We are committed to holding the ASP tour event at Long Beach so that together we can promote the sport by bringing together the best surfers in the world to this terrific community.”

While events of this size are undoubtedly good for some things, it might be a positive thing to concentrate on the surfing. It is, after all a surf contest.

More updates as they develop.
