The Inertia

To have perfect waves to him or herself is a dream scenario for any surfer. Some are more willing to go out of their way than others to achieve that dream–middle of the night wake-up calls, trespassing on private property and paying exorbitant amounts of money for surf trips are not unfamiliar stories. However, one supposed act of desperation may top them all.

According to a thread on Reddit, which may or may not be completely accurate, a La Jolla, California, surf shop employee was supposedly found putting blood inside surfboards that were for sale in order to incite a shark attack. Of course, the police were called and Trystan (employee) was questioned. The user writes, “his main motive was to have sharks eat all the surfers so he could have all the tasty waves to himself,” which, if you read that in a Spicolian accent, is the only chuckle in this situation.

The user goes on to state that “Cops didn’t really see much wrong with that (they were territorial surfers back in the 80s probably). We also didn’t think that was good enough reason to fire him, so he still works there. Although, we do have to search him for blood before every shift,” making this seem like a bit of a sick joke.

On the spectrum of how far out of the way some are willing to go in order to surf perfect waves alone, that would be the most drastic and sadistic way to go about it. The next time someone says you’re crazy for waking up at unholy hours of the morning to surf, just know you could always do worse.
