The Inertia

We recently saw Nate Florence take a major beating on a Puerto Escondido wave. Now, more footage from the major swell last week is starting to roll in.

“Puerto Escondido has been on fire this month with nonstop swell and clean conditions,” said SoCal Surfer in the YouTube description. “Nathan Florence flew in for the swell and had one of the biggest wipeouts we’ve ever seen at Playa Zicatela. May 17, 2023, seemed to be larger than anticipated and offered XXL peaks, barrels, and pristine offshore winds.”

Thrillist called Puerto Escondido “Mexico’s Chillest Surf town,” and the Oaxacan hamlet has it all: vibrant nightlife, incredible ocean views, mezcal tasting, oh yeah, and one of the worlds heaviest beach breaks. Decidedly not chill. It’s like an idyllic beachfront rental with a knife-wielding madman screaming on its doorstep.

In a comment on his own post from the same day, Nate Florence added, “The notorious Puerto Escondido! Seriously heavy water here, never disappoints. This day I had my worst Puerto beat down to date.”
