The Inertia

Learning a new skill can be humbling. Even if you’re an expert at a discipline that seems similar enough, there’s always a whole world of difference you don’t find out about until you actually start. For an example, look no further than the countless snowboarders who expected to be able to pick up surfing and quickly experienced a rude awakening (and vice versa).

Even the pros aren’t immune to this phenomena. Take the foray Zeke Lau recently took into SUP foiling, as documented on his YouTube channel. As a championship tour vet, you’d think he’d be able to pick up just about any water sport he likes, no problem. He’s even been prone foiling for the past five years, for good measure. However, as you can see in his latest video, actually gearing up and getting out in open water had him repeatedly losing balance and eating it like the rest of us.

However, as Zeke already knew from past experience, that’s also all part of the fun. “Let’s see what I can do,” he said, just before going on the first outing. “Learning something new, doing something that’s going to keep me active and growing in the ocean. Super stoked.”
