A portrait of surf photographer Thor Jonsson.
The location where a wave breaks is a fantastic and unpredictable environment where surfers search, wait, test their limits and follow their instincts.
Every wave is unique, and to me, the ocean and surfing is key to a fundamental understanding of nature and balance. The very act of surfing, I believe, is about confronting one’s fears and living one’s dreams. It’s about coming to terms with powers that vastly surpass our own. It’s about emotion. I try to produce some kind of visual poetry, in an ongoing (10 years now) documentary project. I look for essence, long term. Surfing is ethereal.
Thor Jonsson’s photographic work has been presented both at Fotografiska Museet – Stockholm, and The Annenberg Space for Photography – Los Angeles, of which in 2010, he was chosen as one of the worlds top 20 sports-photographers. In printed media Thor Jonsson’s work has been featured in The Surfer’s Path, Huck Magazine, and Modart. Thor Jonsson’s images have been presented at numerous exhibitions in Sweden, Japan, USA, England & France. Thor is currently based in Stockholm, Sweden where he runs his own gallery.
