Gawd, I love people who don’t take surfing seriously. Well, check that, we all have to take surfing seriously sometimes, like when we’re navigating a crowded lineup on a big-ish day, or giving the stink eye back to someone giving us the stink eye. But mostly, surfing is fun. And fun shouldn’t be overly serious. And the comedic duo from “Chad and JT Go Deep” mostly make surfing fun.
They make it fun by giving Ellen DeGeneres their different definitions of stoke. Or lobbying the San Clemente city council for any number of different causes in their Spicoli-inspired cadence. My personal favorite was Chad’s (real name Tom Allen) reaction to the audio book, 50 Shades of Grey.
Well, recently, the surf comedy team stepped it up. With Strider Wilson filling in for JT, he and Chad roamed around Huntington Beach, California having conversations with people in classic quotes from the uber-classic film, Point Break (video below).
Of course some of the deliveries whiffed. But some were spot on. At the 1:08 mark or so, they approach a woman on the HB Pier: “You figure out the secret to riding waves?” Chad asks a random woman who doesn’t seem to care much about surfing. “It’s a state of mind. It’s about losing yourself and finding yourself all at the same time.”
“Cool,” replies the lady, masking her confusion.
“Because fear causes hesitation,” chimes in Strider. “Hesitation causes your worst fears to come true.”
She then sees herself out after a couple the surfers launch a few more bangers. And it’s not just the classic Bodhi-isms the two reel off. There’s some casual (if not scripted) convos in between finding people to annoy.
“You have black mold at your place?” Chad asks Strider (A common Southern California problem in the winter, btw.)
“Yeah dude, apparently my neighbor has been emptying his bong water down my skylight,” replies Strider. “It’s been making me angry. That’s how I found out, I slapped the wall.”
“You slapped the wall?” Chad asks.
“I slapped the wall.”
Remember. Surfing isn’t serious.
