Modon Properties has announced its plans for a massive project on Hudayriyat Island in the United Arab Emirates that will include a Kelly Slater Co. designed wave pool. The announcement claims the attraction will not only be the world’s biggest wave pool, but also boast the world’s longest ride and biggest barrel, according to the Abu Dhabi Media Office.
Recently, rumors circulated that a Kelly Slater Wave Co. pool would soon come to the Middle East, and now they’ve been proven true. However, the pool is just a small piece of a massive project that will span more than 19 square miles, about half the size of Abu Dhabi Island. It will also include high-end residential communities, a velodrome and a large urban park.
The wave pool, called “Surf Abu Dhabi,” was designed in partnership with Kelly Slater Wave Co. and is set to open by the end of 2023. Modon’s announcement boldly claims it will be the largest man-made wave pool ever, in addition to having the world’s longest ride and biggest barrel. The press release also states, “Surf Abu Dhabi will provide an ideal location to host major international events and will play a major role in developing the surfing community locally, regionally, and globally,” suggesting that they may be hoping to host competitions in the new venue.
Jassem Bu Ataba Al Zaabi, Chairman of the Department of Finance, Abu Dhabi and Chairman of Modon Properties said, “The Hudayriyat Island development project is a milestone in Abu Dhabi’s journey of innovation and progress, as it embodies the city’s futuristic vision for sustainable urban planning, building vibrant communities, and developing a diversified economy that boosts the emirate’s competitiveness in all fields.”
