Pipeline surfing with Jamie O'Brien

It’s been a long summer, but winter is finally here. Photo: YouTube//Screenshot

The Inertia

For Pipeline aficionados like Jamie O’Brien, the offseason consists of biding one’s time until Pipe season is open. Sure, they’ll bounce around the planet surfing perfect waves, but in the back of their mind is one thing: Pipe. So when winter rolls around, it’s top of mind, and recently the first real winter swell unlocked the gates to Gnar-nia.

Jamie O’Brien, as you’d expect, was waiting. As one of the most official of Pipe aficionados, it’s likely he was up all night with dreams of tubes behind his eyes.

“There’s a bunch of guys out there,” Jamie said from his house that overlooks the best wave in the world. “But they’re not as psyched as I am. I wouldn’t say it’s winter because it’s still November, but it’s a Hawaii winter. The season is coming to a change and the waves are starting to pump.”

As Jamie does, he made the quick walk from his door to the wave and he did what he does best: dominate Pipeline. Since surfing often isn’t an all-day affair, Jamie spread his wings a little and decided to spend a few hours fishing. The fishing lure pros at Tsutomu Lures crafted him a special lure and they went and tested it out. Guess what? It was a successful test.
