It’s been a rough waiting period for Pipe. While still fun for the Average Joe, the waves along the seven-mile miracle haven’t been exactly contestable the world’s most famous wave. But a waiting period is a waiting period, and they can wait no longer. The Pipe Invitational just kicked off in conditions that are definitely not ideal.
It’s a tough gig, this contest surfing. Within a certain amount of days, organizers need to run a certain amount of heats. And, as everyone knows, Mother Nature isn’t always going to provide exactly what we want exactly when we want it. It’s that fickleness that makes surfing so great… but it doesn’t always go our way. The forecast is looking a little bleak, too, at least until the weekend when things begin to pick up.
